Dr. Steinmetz is an assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine at McGill University. In 2013, he founded undergraduate (Y1-Y4) bedside ultrasound teaching at McGill University. In 2013, he also co-founded with Dr. Lewis, the Bedside Ultrasound Course for Family Medicine Residents at McGill University and the MUSE intensive ultrasound workshops for health care professionals. He is a board member of the Canadian Point of Care Ultrasound Society (CPoCUS), where he contributes to certification standards for ultrasound use in the family physician’s office. His textbook “Bedside Ultrasound-Level 1” has been awarded a Prix d'Excellence by the Quebec Association of Family Physicians and he has received a teaching award from St. Mary’s Hospital. He has published on the accuracy and skill acquisition of medical students using bedside ultrasound. He has been invited to teach bedside ultrasound in Asia (Thailand) and Africa (Rwanda) and co-directed the World Congress of Ultrasound in Medical Education in 2017. He is a CPoCUS certified Independent Practitioner.

Dr. Steinmetz currently works at a community health clinic where point of care ultrasound is actively used in a family medicine setting. His ongoing research involves interactive 3D heart models as a teaching aid for scanning the heart.
