THERE ARE SO MANY OPTIONS FOR OUR PATIENTS IN 2018. MORE ORAL AGENTS ON THE MARKET AND NEWER INJECTABLES. YOU CAN POTENTIALLY PRESCRIBE 6 ORAL AGENTS AND 1 INJECTABLE PRIOR TO INITIATING INSULIN THERAPY. THE MAIN MESSAGE IS TO NOT WAIT TOO LONG; WE HAVE GREAT AGENTS BUT MANY PATIENTS STILL NEED BASAL INSULIN. WE WILL TALK ABOUT HOW TO DECIDE WHEN BASAL IS NEEDED AND WHAT BASAL OPTIONS ARE THERE. FURTHERMORE TO UNDERSTAND WHICH ORAL AGENTS TO STOP ONCE BASAL IS INITIATED AND HOW TO TITRATE.

Objectives

  • understand what oral and injectable failure means
  • know when to start insulin therapy; to understand what insulin therapies are available and how to titrate
