Overview

Allergic diseases affect up to 30% of the population.  In children, food allergies and medication allergies are common diagnoses but ae they real?  Upto 90% of adults, labelled as allergic to penicillin as children, are found not to be allergic on challenge.  So what do we need to do to prevent misdiagnosis?  In the realm of food allergy, sweeping changes are occuring.  Prevention strategies are being introduced with some success but there are pitfalls to be avoided.  these will be discussed.

Objectives
  • As a result of attending this session, participants will be able to:
    • Discuss the unique aspects of allergies in children with empahsis on food and drug allergy
    • Discuss methods for accurtae diagnosis
    • Discuss best management practices for both prevention and treatment
