All health professionals with elderly patients in their practice have been faced with the question - often raised by the person's family - "Is s/he safe to stay at home?", particularly when that means living home alone. A framework to systematically consider the many biopsychosocial factors that weigh in on that decision will be presented; and participants are encouraged to use the upload "Worksheet-elderly-pt-safe-stay-home" to prepare a "case" from their own practice for informal discussion* with the group. (*For academic purposes only - discussion at the workshop does not constitute a clinical consultation.)

Objectives

In this workshop, the participant will:

  • Obtain a general clinical framework for the holistic assessment of elderly patients
  • Review the framework specifically for the basic assessment of an elderly patient’s choice to live at home
  • Apply this framework to specific “cases” (from own clinical practice or examples) – see “Worksheet-elderly-pt-safe-stay-home."
