Canadian guidelines for diabetes were recently updated 2018; There are many new meds for diabetes and newer insulins;Blood pressure and Ldl targets remain the same. For patients with heart disease and a1c over 7 choices are meds from glp1 class or sglt2 inhibitor class that have demonstrated cardiovascular protection; Focus is now on agents that are effective and that dont cause weight gain of hypoglycemia for all patients with diabetes. Newer insulins are available with longer duration and less hypoglycemia; Aspirin is no longer offered for most patients for primary prevention.Women of chidlbearing age should be taught preconceptional counselling to avoid negative pregnancy outcomes

 

 

 

Objectives

As a result of attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • be aware of latest meds for diabetes                  
  • be aware of what meds to prescribe for patients with cardiovascular disease    
  • be aware of when and for who to prescribe statin and or ace inhibitor  be aware of preconceptional counselling  
  • be aware of newer insulins and how thye work
